Symptom of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in Colleen Hoover's Hopeless
This thesis discusses Symptom of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in the novel Hopeless. Hopeless tells the story of a child named Sky who was sexually abused by her father when she was young and made her traumatic. It made her far from all her friends as a child, unfamiliar with electronic goods, social life and many more. The thesis aims at discovering the Symptom of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in Colleen Hoover's Hopeless novel that underlies the behavior of the main character, Sky. This research is categorized into literary criticism using psychoanalysis as a theoretical approach. In analyzing the data, the researcher used theory of post traumatic stress disorder from Gerald C Davison. The researcher found two symptoms of Sky's post traumatic stress disorder. They are re-experiencing symptoms and avoiding symptoms. Re-experiencing symptom is a kind of symptom in post traumatic stress disorder involving the memory of traumatic events in the past, repetition of the trauma experience indicated by always remembering the sad events that have been experienced. Avoiding symptom is efforts people make to avoid the traumatic event, might avoid going near places where the trauma occurred, might avoid other sights, sounds, smells or people that are a reminder of the traumatic event. The implication of this research IS to give understanding to the readers that post traumatic stress disorder concept IS very important to know, to understand and to avoid as much as possible, because it will have a very bad impact on the life of a victim. The result that the researcher found is that this incident has completely changed Sky's life making Sky traumatized by many things, making life not as normal as before experiencing the incident. Sky always has nightmares, becomes sad and cries without knowing the cause and many more
