The Effect Of Hierarchy Of Human Needs to Veronika's , Decision to Suicide In The Novel Veronika Decides to Die By Paulo Coelho
This study discusses the hierarchy of needs in the novel Veronika Decides to Die. This study aims to analyze the effect of the hierarchy of needs on Veronika's decision to commit suicide by using the hierarchy of needs theory by Abraham Harold Maslow. The writer took the data from the novel Veronika Decides to Die by Paulo Coelho as the primary data and Paulo Coelho's blog as the secondary data. This study used gualitative methods and descriptive analysis technigues in revealing the data. This study found that The main character Veronika can fulfill her two human needs: Physiological Needs and Security Needs. However, there are three needs that she cannot fulfill, which are Belongingness and Love Needs, Self-Esteem Needs, and Self-Actualization Needs. Because of her unfulfilled human needs, she now views everything from a negative side. She despised herself, had no strength, desire, or passion, and thought she was useless. She also feels that her life is uninteresting and has no meaning. All the negative thoughts in Veronika's mind made her feel empty, alone, and she thought this life was unworthy to live. That is why she decided to commit suicide.
